Welcome back to another issue of The Denham Springs Local.

Got a pretty slow week with Labor Day coming up and that storm brewing in the gulf.

Looks like we might get a little break from the heat this week. I’m sure it has to do with that tropical storm coming in, though.

Quick favor: if you know somebody who would like to know what's happening around town, forward this email to them. It helps us grow and helps them know what's going on!

Alright, let's get into it…

SHOUTOUT OF THE WEEK

The one building that didn't flood

They broke ground last week on a $2.4 million addition to the STEM & Robotics Center at Denham Springs High.

It sits on what used to be Southside Elementary. The 2016 flood wrecked most of it and it got torn down. But one piece made it. A new cafeteria and classroom building that had opened just days before the water came.

They kept it and it became the core of the STEM Center when it opened in 2019.

Now there are 850 kids in there doing engineering, robotics, and video production. The new addition brings three more classrooms plus a process technology program lined up with what the plants around here are actually hiring for. (As a mechanical engineer myself, this is huge. I didn’t have any classes in high school or even college that prepared me for plant projects.)

The superintendent pointed out they broke ground almost exactly on the anniversary of the flood.

Ten years later and one of the better things we've got came out of the worst week this town ever had.
